Period 6 GOATs

Today, we started class by reading the blog.  After, we read our quote of the week by Amanda Gorman “When day comes, we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it.”  Following that, we answered our question of the week that asked “ What is one thing you will take with you and one thing you will leave behind?” I think the entire class could agree we want to leave behind the negativity and stress this pandemic has caused.  Then, we listened to the song of the week: “Bookends” by Simon and Garfunkel. We talked about how we each interpreted the song.  Lastly, Ms. Nakada had us write letters to our future selves and that wrapped up our class.

By Ollie:  First, Ms. Nakada did attendance. Then, we read the blog and corrected it. Ms. Nakada reviewed the Jamboard and then  told us to go to our assignment, “ College Fit,” which we went over. We then talked about what colleges we would like to go to. Then, Ms. Nakada made our test for the week available. After we did the test, we were free to go.

 by Robert Hello period 6! First, Ms. Nakada took attendance. Then, we read the blog and opened the Jamboard. After that, we did a small check-in in terms of how we were doing at the beginning of the school year, to now. Subsequently, we went over the quote of the week, "It takes courage to grow up and become who you are." by E.E. Cummings. Next, we went over the question of the week, "How have you changed/grown in the past three years?" After that, we listened to the song of the week, "Best Day Of My Life" by American Authors. Then, Ms. Nakada told us to head over to Schoology and to open up the assignment "College Fit." We talked about all of the things we are thinking about in attending college and then she let us go.

On Friday, we started off by reading the blog. Ms. Nakada then made sure we knew the future plans for wrapping up school for 8th graders. Then, Ms. Nakada blessed us by performing her graduation speech, which I’m sure gave many inspiration, as she slyly hid in a saying from  RENT  the musical. We went over the 10-year plan and how much different careers make. Finally, we took quizzes and were done for the week!

For class today we started out by reading the blog. We then headed over to the Jamboard and discussed the quote of the week: "Awards become corroded. Friends gather no dust." Jesse Owens  The question of the week was: what awards and accomplishments can you include on college/scholarship applications? Then we listened to the song of the week, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" Boyz II Men.  After the song we all listened to each others poem for the poetry slam. There were so many amazing poems shared that Ms. Nakada was brought to tears and period 6 won the slam.  That was it for the day. 

In class today, we first started with attendance and talked about what we did in the eighth grade culmination Zoom meeting. After that, we went over to the Jamboard to get us ready for the test that was due after class. Once we finished with the Jamboard, we did our STAR reading tests and when we were finished we were told to do our Get Lit performances. And that’s how our day finished.

By Drew Ms. Nakada took attendance, and after that we wrote down the agenda and listened to the blog, we looked at the quote of the week, "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." Maya Angelou.  We then went into the question of the week: "What are you concerned about for high school?" A lot of people were concerned with workload, tests, new environments, and making/keeping friends. After this, we moved into the song, “See You Again” Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.  Ms. Nakada then went into more detail about the graduation speeches and Ms. Nakada shared a speech she created. Ms. Nakada also promised us another speech about us specifically.  After this we worked on our poetry collections until we were dismissed. 

Ms. Nakada said, “Hi,” to all of us. Then, after we corrected the blog, Ms. Nakada gave us time to work on our Broadsides. Ms. Nakada showed us some of hers and we told her which poems, or lines of poems, we were using for ours. Then, we went on Book Creator and Ms. Nakada showed us her book. After, Ms. Nakada told us about our quiz and how to write “Garden Song” correctly. Then, Ms. Nakada told us May was Mental Health Awareness Month. After, we went to the Jamboard and talked about some ways we can revise our poems. Some strategies were to read aloud and get feedback, read aloud for punctuation, and take notes from other poems and apply them to yours. We then worked on our poetry collections. While we worked, we looked at old students’ introduction pages. We also looked at one of Ms. Nakada's. Then, we watched “Unforgettable” performed by Pages Matam, Liz Acevedo, and G. Yamazawa. After, we talked about Get Lit. We took our quiz and were dismissed.

  We started off the day with Ms. Nakada writing the agenda. After, we went over the blog and corrected it.  The Quote of the Week was, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” -Master Yoda. I believe this means that you don't need to try to make something happen, you need to make it happen.  The Question of the Week was, "How can you create balance in your life?" I believe that you can create balance by making a plan/schedule.  The Song of the Week was, “Garden Song” -Phoebe Bridgers. I believe this song is about getting older and growing up. My favorite line was, “I don’t know how, but I’m taller.”  We then talked about broadside poems, our poem collections, and the Get Lit poems.

Hi period 6, Ms. Nakada started class by saying hi to everyone. Next, we did the blog and corrections, and I got chosen. We then headed over to the Jamboard and read the poems “Hope” by Emily Dickinson, and “The Laughing Heart” by Charles Bukowski. Since it was the last day of NaPoWriMo, we took a couple minutes to write some poems. After that, we quickly met in our breakout rooms for lit circles before taking the week 15 quiz. When we were done, we were free to go.

  Ms. Nakada welcomed us into class by saying good morning and hello to everyone. Then, Ms. Nakada played the beginning of a movie called  Ferris Bueller's Day Off , because the quote of the week was from Mr. Ferris Bueller himself. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around you might miss it.” We answered the question of the week which was "How can slowing down help you be more successful?" Ms. Nakada's answer was, “Life is about the journey and not the destination.” The song of the week was, "Apple Tree" by Erykah Badu. Then, we read the poem “It's Not Your Job” by Caitlyn Siehl. We wrote some poems ourselves, and then met in literature circles. After that, Ms. Nakada let us go.

We started the class with Ms. Nakada greeting us as usual. After the blog, we reviewed what we did on Wednesday and then read the poem, “Toy Boat” by Ocean Vuong. Then, we started to have a discussion about what the poem meant. After this, we started our poem writing time. When our first writing time was up, Ms. Nakada shared with us blackout poetry. Then, we began with our second writing time. After that was done, people shared some of their poetry lines with Ms. Nakada, and we went into our literature circle groups. When we got back into the main group, Ms. Nakada went over our schedules for hybrid learning. 

We started class by taking attendance and doing the blog corrections. We went over the quote of the week which was a poem. “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams. “I have eaten/ the plums/ that were in/ the icebox // and which you were/ probably saving/ for breakfast / forgive me/ they were delicious/ so sweet/ and so cold.” The question of the week was, what is your poetic aesthetic? The song of the week was, “I'm Still Standing” By Elton John. Next, we went over a poem "There Are Bird Here" by Jamaal May, and then we wrote our own poems. After writing poems, we did lit-circles and got dismissed.

Hello, period 6. First, we started class with Ms. Nakada taking attendance. After the blog, we read a poem, "Abuelito Who" by Sandra Cisneros, and Ms. Nakada showed us prompts and gave us time to write our poems. She also allowed some of us to share. We ended class by going into our lit circle groups and taking the Week 13 Quiz. After that, Ms. Nakada let us go.

Hello, sixth period English! The first thing we did in class was attendance. After that, we looked at the Jamboard and saw the quote of the week, “Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity to our existence" by Audre Lorde. Next, we discussed the question of the week: Who/what defines who you are? Then, we listened to our song of the week, "Freedom" by Beyonce and featuring Kendrick Lamar.  We read the poem, “Before” by Ada Limón. We wrote two poems.  The last thing we did was work in literature circle groups. 

On Monday for fourth period, it was another sunny, spring in Los Angeles. Ms. Nakada opened the Jamboard and we discussed the  quote of the week: “We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back” by Malala Yousafzai. The question of the week was “How do gender expectations create systems of both privilege and oppression?” We worked on our essays. Ms. Nakada looked a little tired today. W e talked about our question of the week.  The song of the week was “Respect” by Aretha Franklin. Next, we read for literature circles and planned for spring break. We started IABs. 

Bruh, no one did the blog again.  First,  we went to the Jamboard. W e discussed the quote of the week by Alice Walker. We also discussed the Question of the Week: "What does gender equity look like in our schools?" and  we questioned gender equity.  After discussing the Question of the Week, Ms. Nakada played the Song of the Week, "Luka" by Suzanne Vega, and we talked about our favorite lyrics of the song. After that, w e all did the first part of the second part of our draft s for our  I.O. &.B.A.  essays due on Friday.

Today, we went over Jaeda’s blog and made corrections. Then, we went over the quote, question, and song of the week. The quote of the week was by Michelle Obama, and the song of the week was by  Chimamanda Ngozi Adechie and Beyonce. We then also talked about literature circles and worked on our Inside Out and Back Again prompt and draft.We answered three questions and Ms. Nakada Let us go.

Today, in Ms. Nakada’s class we read Kymiya’s blog and made some corrections to it. Then, we went to the Jamboard and Ms. Nakada read paragraphs about refugees and compared some of the characters or situations from the Inside Out and Back Again to refugees. Next, we read Inside Out and Back Again and went into break-out rooms. After that, we finished the Inside Out and Back Again book. In the end, we took the Week 8 Quiz, and after that she let us go.

Today in class, we had read the blog and did corrections. Ms. Nakada had given us the link to the Jamboard. We read the quote of the week by Krish O’Mara Vignarajah. Then, we had answer the question of the week. After that, we listened to the song of the week named “Immigrants: We Get the Job Done.” After listening to the song of the week, Seena & Josie read a page from Inside Out And Back Out . Ms. Nakada had put us in a break out room to read. After that, we shared our three word summaries. Ms. Nakada explained part 3&4 collage. After that, she let us go.
